There's still time to Roadtrip! How to make them tolerable.

How to Make Road Trips Fun for Everyone (Yes, Even the Backseat Crowd)

We just got back from our first family road trip in years—and let’s just say, we were a little rusty. Between forgotten chargers, backseat bickering, and snacks that mysteriously melted despite being in the shade, we had our share of hiccups. But we also had moments of connection, belly laughs, and quiet reflections that reminded us why these trips matter.

Road trips can be magical, but let’s be honest: they can also test your patience. If you’re planning to hit the road this summer, here are a few ways to make the journey more enjoyable for everyone—whether it’s your first road trip in years or your fifth this season.

1. Set Expectations Before You Leave

Not every moment will be exciting, and that’s okay. Talk as a family about what to expect: how long you’ll be driving, where the major stops are, and what the general vibe of the trip will be. Giving kids—even teens—a chance to help plan the route or pick a snack can help them feel more involved (and less likely to complain... maybe).

2. Boredom Isn’t the Enemy

As therapists at Refresh Counselling often remind our clients, boredom isn’t always bad. It gives our minds space to rest, imagine, and reset. So don’t feel pressured to keep everyone entertained at every moment. Sometimes the best parts of a road trip are the unexpected ones—like spotting wildlife on the highway or making up silly songs out of nowhere.

3. Take the Extra Bathroom Break

Seriously. Don’t stress about the schedule too much. It’s okay to stop more often than you thought you would. It’s okay if you show up an hour later than planned. The journey is part of the experience, not just the means to an end. Some of the best family memories are made at gas station pit stops or pulling over to take in a view.

4. Pack Emotional First Aid

Long car rides can test anyone’s patience. Pack more than snacks and chargers—bring emotional tools too:

  • A calm-down playlist

  • A small comfort item (even for grown-ups!)

  • Breathing strategies or sensory toys

  • Space to say “I need a minute” without judgment

Let your kids know that it’s normal to get grumpy or overstimulated—and that the goal isn’t a perfect trip, but a connected one.

5. Rotate Roles and Keep Things Fresh

Take turns being the “navigator,” “DJ,” or “snack manager.” Switching roles keeps everyone engaged and gives kids a sense of ownership. Mix in audiobooks, travel games, quiet time, and music breaks so everyone gets a bit of what they need.

6. Embrace the Detours

Whether it’s a scenic lookout, a weird roadside attraction, or an unexpected meltdown—be open to the detours. They often become the most talked-about part of the trip later. Flexibility is key to keeping stress levels low and making room for moments of joy.
