How does online counselling work?

Getting started with online counselling at Refresh Counselling is simple and convenient.

Step 2: Complete Your Secure Intake

Once connected with a therapist, you'll receive a secure link to complete your intake form. This takes just 15–30 minutes to share your background, billing information, and therapy goals.

Are online therapy sessions private and secure?

Yes! Your privacy and security are our top priorities. At Refresh Counselling, we use a secure platform that meets strict PIPEDA and HIPAA privacy standards.
Our online sessions use peer-to-peer encrypted communication, meaning the connection flows directly between you and your therapist—bypassing external servers. No session data is stored anywhere at any time.
You can feel confident that your therapy sessions remain completely private and secure.

How does it work? What do I have to do in online sessions?

This is one of the most common counselling questions we get asked and certainly makes sense because the nature of therapy is so dynamic. Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual. We tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

Will I be able to record audio or the chat communication?

Video, audio, or chat communication cannot be recorded during an Online Appointment session. This approach ensures that this feature remains HIPAA compliant and addresses major privacy concerns around telehealth posed by clinics.

Can I do a combination of Online sessions and In Person sessions?

Absolutely!  In most cases you will have the option to do all your sessions either in person or online.  Please work directly with your therapist to hone in on which format they recommend best for you. 

**note - there may be some types of intervention and treatment that are more effective in person rather than online or vice versa**
