Couples Counselling

When you chose to make a commitment to your significant other, you likely knew that the road ahead would not always be smooth. But perhaps you never anticipated the struggles you and your partner are experiencing. And maybe you don’t feel you know how to “fix” the problems you have.

Couples can face challenges ranging from the niggling irritations of sharing your space and life, navigating parenthood, and the business of living with another, to some very serious issues that can threaten the future of your relationship.

When you are struggling to resolve conflict, understand your partner, improve satisfaction, and address trust and communication, Refresh Couples Counselling can provide a safe, supportive, and impartial space to explore your challenges and develop strategies to build a strong, sustainable, and healthy partnership.

Beside You On Your Journey

Relationships work. Sometimes it's just a little bit of work… checking in with your partner, being considerate, compromise. But sometimes it is A LOT of work. It is up and down, and no matter what you do, one or both of you may feel unhappy, unsatisfied, disconnected, or betrayed.

There is no stereotypical client for Couples Counselling. Couples of any race, gender, age; couples who have been together for decades and even those just beginning their relationship may feel the need for therapy. Some common reasons couples seek counselling are:

  • Communication Challenges
  • Cultural Differences
  • Anger & Resentment
  • Sexual Concerns
  • Family Planning
  • Fertility Challenges
  • Unfaithfulness
  • Parenting Challenges
  • Co-Parenting Challenges
  • Nontraditional Relationships
  • Spiritual Differences
  • Blended Families
  • Respect Issues
  • Trust Issues
  • The End of a Relationship
  • Digital Age Issues
  • Addictions
  • Jealousy
  • Premarital Guidance

Your relationship does not need to be in serious trouble to benefit from therapy. Some couples with healthy and strong relationships will seek out therapy to create a pathway to continue to grow and thrive as life evolves. Our diverse team of Psychologists can create a space for you and your partner to explore the challenges that are holding you back from having the healthiest, most supportive, and satisfying relationship. Your sessions will help you understand your partner better, improve your relationship, and learn new skills. Couples therapy is an opportunity to explore and process needs, feelings, goals, and decision-making.

Couples Counselling: How Does It Work?

Most likely your journey to a healthier relationship will begin with a joint session where the conversation about the challenges you are facing can be facilitated. As the process progresses, you may have some individual sessions intermingled with your joint sessions to allow each partner to explore challenges on their own. Your therapist will strive to provide insight to help you understand the obstacles you face as a couple and offer interventions to improve communication, conflict management, empathy, intimacy, and respect.

Our Refresh Counselling psychologists who offer Couples Counselling are passionate about helping couples find healing and build strong and lasting relationships. They are trained to guide this process using a variety of approaches including:

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT): assessing the interaction styles of a couple and acknowledging fears and negative emotions related to the behaviours, to de-escalate conflict, and develop new strategies to change interactions and strengthen connections

Gottman Method: a comprehensive assessment of the relationship and the development of a roadmap to help couples manage conflict, deepen intimacy and affections, strengthen communication, and set goals for the relationship

The challenges each couple faces and their journey towards resolution and a healthy sustainable relationship are unique. Our psychologists understand the intricacies of a committed partnership and will work with you to create a completely personalized plan to address your obstacles and help you build a loving and supportive framework for your relationship.

Couples Counselling FAQs

If you both wish to address concerns and improve your relationship you should try couples counselling. As part of the strategy to help you build your relationship, we may meet with each of you individually throughout the process. And of course, if either of you wishes to do some exploration of issues on your own, outside of your relationship framework, we are available to help you find mental wellness in every aspect of your life.

Every couple’s journey to finding a connection and strengthening their relationship is unique. Generally, couples will attend sessions once per week, but your therapist understands that schedules can be difficult to coordinate. When you choose to pursue counselling to create change in your relationship, it is important to prioritize that effort. Your psychologist can help jcreate a schedule that works for you. And as for how long it will take? There is no definite answer, but you can discuss your goals with your counsellor, and they will work hard to help you get there as efficiently as possible.

Sometimes one partner may be resistant to therapy as a tool to improve your relationship. This can be frustrating and discouraging. But we would encourage you to seek counselling on your own if you are struggling with challenges affecting your relationship, even if your partner does not attend. Even if only one partner begins exploring obstacles to a healthy relationship and tools to help improve the connection, both people can benefit. And sometimes if the resistant partner sees the change and resilience developing in the partner in therapy, they may become more open to participating.

If you are concerned about your relationship, and you would both like to work with me, I would initially work with both of you together. After this work, if one of you would like to continue in individual sessions, I could work with only one of you. It is not helpful to move from individual into couple’s work with the same therapist because of potential trust issues.
